    HLH was founded as non-profit in 1986 by a group of Native Hawaiian physicians and concerned citizens. In 1991 the organization gained a professional status under the Native Hawaiian Health Care Improvement Act. The organization is trying to improve the health status of Native Hawaiians, which have the highest rates for diabetes, obesity, cardio-vascular disease, and poor dental health. At the basic core of these problems is proper diet, nutrition, and lack of exercise.
